Happy New Year + 1 day

National Day of Mourning today for Gerald Ford, but also a day of celebration for some college teams. I was happy to watch USC and Boise State win their games yesterday. Now I am pulling for Florida next week and then everything BCS will be up in the air. And of course, congrats to Bobby Knight. I am sure that many UNC/Dean Smith fans are not that happy. But a sports' story that I am sad about is the fatal shooting of the Denver Bronco's player. 24 years old, with his life ahead of him.
I am a bit "skid-ish" this a.m. since I forgot my ritual of "rabbit, rabbit" on the first day of each month...we will see what January has in store without this good luck mantra being said out loud first thing. I guess that is my first chance to practice my "free from fear" approach to the new year. But the only thing I said out loud before "rabbit, rabbit" was at church if that gives me a pass?
New Year's Day was quiet. I did go in to see my second cousin and his family at my parents. They make their semi-annual pilgrimage to the area. They are an incredible family. We were joking about their family being the only one in the Northeast that has no cable or satellite service to their house. I wonder how their kids got to be so peaceful, focused and well read...and a family that does things together on as many occasions as possible. It is getting more difficult as one offspring is in grad school in Idaho and one in Australia - but the effort is always there to be together. Other than that visit, I went to church in the morning, walk in the afternoon and football from then on. Now to shift gears to get back to work mode.
16 days until my Houston trip. Texas A&M and Oklahoma State are both doing well, and JameSon is doing very well at OKS. It will be a good basketball game to watch. I have not traveled by air since the carry on rules have changed, so I will check bags for the first time since 2003. I usually travel light enough to take everything on with me. This should make my trip more leisurely since I will not be hauling everything on the plane with me. I did take a long layover versus very short in Charlotte NC as a hedge for bad weather and make sure everything gets to where it is supposed to go.
I am starting my search for a new car. I have been putting it off and off, and I am not on any manic mission yet, but I am thinking that before my trip to NC in February which I want to do by car so I can stop and do a DC day on the way down? We will see how that plan goes.
I have not confirmed this, but I THINK I heard on the Chris Matthews Show on Sunday that Barack Obama smokes cigarettes? I need to look into that. That is a huge factoid to me if it is true.
Better get ready for work.
