I had an interesting day. I woke up early but did not have a plan until 10 a.m. church so I relaxed, took my walk, put some stuff in the new car then walked to church. It was a mixed message - good news, bad news - my name did not levitate from the hat. It was a strange site as the priest had people in the pews pick names...then slowly walked back to the altar to read the names. Lots of drama! I was glad it was not God's will that I be on another committee.
Then it was off to Carvel to buy my cake. I had stopped at Shaw's the night before and thought paying 18 or 25 dollars for an ice cream cake was highway robbery AND I thought it would be cheaper to buy directly from the Carvel store...wrong - $27! I spent more on that cake than I have on clothes in the last 12 months! Incredible! I will check at Big Y the next time I am there to see what their pricing is. Rough start of my day.
Once I got to my parents the NYC group was there - sans son. And the word was already out that I had purchased the last car in the United States of America without power locks and windows - even the next door neighbor came over to look at the brand new "relic". BUT I can open my windows without the car being on. In case of an emergency I can crawl out of my window if the car malfunctions...I love my "retro" or "old school" car. Even when I don't make a conscious effort, I find a way to put myself on the outside looking in...people did "get" my ESPN and the cable TV issue and how you have to buy stuff you don't want in order to get ONE thing you do want. But I did not see the crank windows and manual locks as a "minus".
I now have 105 miles and the gas gauge has not moved. Another reason I love my new car. My old Mazda was good on gas for its age and condition, but I think I am going to see a positive gas situation.
The end of the day at my parents took a turn - when niece #2 went out to start her car that had been sitting in my parents' garage - dead battery. My father had started it up a week ago, but it was dead. So AAA to the rescue. Ironically the service man was from Dominique and he was surprised that a family in West Hartford CT were so informed on an island in the Eastern Caribbean. It all ended well and the NYC group headed off just a few minutes after my brother and his girls showed up on their way home from an AAU basketball tournament(brother and niece #3) and UCONN (niece #1). I headed home shortly after the NYC crowd.
Up early this a.m. because I did not stop by work on the way home as I had planned yesterday. Will head out in a few.
Did not make it through all of Q&A. Warren Buffett's sister was on. Very interesting family story there. And speaking of the Mid West - sister #2 spoke about one of her friends moving to Des Moines IA. I am going to keep an eye on the project she and her husband are moving out there to work on.
As to my son, he called about 8:30 p.m. right after I had given up on staying awake for the balance of Q&A. From the background noise, he was still hanging at McCarren Park. The chick from Toronto is coming into town on Wednesday. That will make his life look different...
Book Club and Budget Town Hall Meeting tonight. Should be a fun day. It was predicted to be a rainy day today but the forecast has changed this morning. Sounds like it will be a pretty day. Think it will get it started.
