People day on steroids... :)

Chance meeting to say the least and huge news from NC.  I went way down memory lane yesterday and then got a big dose of future happenings via email this a.m.  8:30 a.m. "lift off" (the way sister #1 drives feels like a rocket launch...) and off to Old Lyme and incredible tour of Florence Griswold Museum and ran into part of the founding family of the beach we went to from 1956-1976.   https://www.hawksnestbeach.com/  And obviously we were just a nanosecond on their history.  Started going there post losing our house in the Flood of  '55 and I remember having a graduation from college party there in 1975.  And sister #1 took her daughter and some of the local cousins there in the early.mid '90's.  We were having a problem with the timeline yesterday.  Beach was picked because it was where they would rent to Irish back in the 50's.  Each beach had its ethnicity.  Glad we were Irish.  :)

So cat tending, "lift off", beach to see the old cottage, museum, Hallmark Drive-In for lunch, then to see my landlord/landlady at their beach house "across the river" from ours on Long Island Sound.  Then home in time for cat tending and then close out the day with GA DC.  

Then woke up to hear that NC friends are moving out of their home for 43 years...that home was the safe harbor for our family during Hurricane Fran and they have been my safe harbor ever since.  I am so glad that the puzzle pieces have all come together.  As I said it was a full dose of memory lane items over the last 24 hours.  

Today - cat tending, Willimantic with sister #1 and friend from Paraguay to visit friend's AFS family from when when she traveled from Paraguay to CT for her senior year in college.  So close, but she and sister #1 would meet in Paraguay in 1973.  I kept using the term "bien emocionante" yesterday.  Lots of emotions.  :)

You may find it hard to be the life and soul of the party, but that’s OK. No one expects you to be at your best every minute of the day, so don’t expect it of yourself. It’s OK to give the social whirl a miss for a bit.

People week underway... :)

Rooftop restaurant for linner yesterday.  Sister #1 and friend from Paraguay arrived for their 4 day visit.  We are off to the Long Island Sound today, Willimantic tomorrow, nowhere (PHEW!) on Friday.  They leave Saturday a.m. and cat owner comes back on Saturday so I will push the reset button on Saturday.  :)  Did get a great gift bag from Paraguay friend.  All things Paraguayo! 

So yesterday - ran dishwasher, cat tending, walk, CA DC, cat tending, linner, very short walk with sister (she had been in car all day).  Today - cat tending, getting picked up at 8:30 a.m., no EOLD for sure, will hope to be back in time for GA DC, but we will see, cat tending.  Will meet up with sister #4 for lunch today.  And with landlord and landlady at their beach house after lunch.  

You don’t have to do something just because others expect it of you, but you should certainly do it if it will be good for you personally. You may be a good guy by nature, but pleasing other people is not always the best way to show it.

A different "holiday"

Week 2 of weaning myself off Shoprite.  :)  $20.53 shopping day.  Will not try to do comparison every week...but still all items less at ALDI and self check out.  Shopping is definitely not a social occasion at ALDI.  :)  So yesterday in prep for sister #1 and company, cleaned apt, did load of wash, tended cat-1, walked, parade called off so no need to adjust time for walk, ALDI, tended cat-2, ZEN DC.  

Today - run dishwasher, cat tending-1, walk with family friend, CA DC, cat tend-2, sister and friend arrive (driving) in at 4-ish.  Hope they will want to get settled in their airbnb and call it a night early.  Road trip to Florence Griswold Museum and beach tomorrow.  Saw that son got TURO car for his trip here.  I will pay for it.  Don't want to rely on my car or drive while he is here.  I need to try that out as an instead of buying a new car transport option for me going forward.  People in my town participate.  We will see if I am moved to travel.  :)  

Will take poll worker check with me today on walk in case I want to cash it.

Bench

In the spirit of the weekend, on Friday I walked by "the bench" in the upper cemetery.  Nobody is buried there, but it put in after my father died.  The spot overlooks the town we grew up in and where I live.  No flags on the upper section, but both parents were veterans.  Coast Guard for mother and Army Air Corp for father.  Savannah GA for mother, "the hump" - India to China flights - for father.  But with all that said, 8 a.m. they will decide whether rain will cause the cancellation of the parade.  I was not planning to watch so it will make the day more manageable for me to get my day done if they do cancel.  Plan is - cat tending, walk, ALDI, wash clothes, cat, ZEN DC. All will flow easier without the parade which routes right in front of my apt and overlaps on walk routes.  :) Need to decide what day I will clean apt since we will be doing a road trip on Wednesday and one on Thursday...

Yesterday - cat, abbreviated walk (Burlington and back) due to cold rain, Albany CA DC.  Tomorrow - walk with family friend, cash check from poll work?, CA DC, meet up with sister #1 and friend from Paraguay.  Wednesday - Florence Griswold Museum, lunch - Hallmark?, beach house of my landlord and landlady and sister #1's classmate. Will see if I get to GA DC on Wed night.  Thursday - road trip to Willimantic to visit with Paraguayan friend's "sister" from her exchange year here in the US in the 1968-69 school year.  Cat twice a day thrown in to each of these days.

And the "A" is back!

Did not expect it so soon, but computer guy called right after I got back from my walk yesterday and said he had the new keyboard insert.  So I hustled up and sat in his yard while he fixed it.  Reading my Roosevelt.  So no more external keyboard and no more soft typing to make sure all the letters kept working.  

So yesterday, walk and computer.  Cat tending starts today.  Sister #1 arrival on Tuesday.  Will hope that it is after my CA DC and we are back from our Wednesday travels for 7 p.m. GA DC.  Should work.  No other schedule items except the cat which is flexible and just a few minutes walk from apt.  

Today cat, umbrella walk to Unionville is my thought, Albany CA DC at 7 p.m.  See if anything else appears.  3:33 a.m. as we speak.

"Holiday" weekend begins...

I am going with kindness week as my holiday of choice.  No plan except my cat tending starting tomorrow.  Sister #1 and friend coming in on Tuesday.  

Yesterday - walk with family friend, read more Roosevelt - many more incidences of "what is old is new again" in our country's life and times, SDHS presentation.  Speaker wowed me as always.  

Today...Boston Blue, All-in, walk.  Uninspired is giving me more "oomph" than I feel this a.m.  Barometric pressure dropping?

What it takes to keep me going :)

Don't know if you can see the red circle around the "A" on the external keyboard that gets called into play if my laptop A sticks...But I thought I would highlight my "2026 technology" - Dell laptop, external keyboard, flip phone, paper calendar with requisite pencil, and my digital picture frame that son and others send pics to me that they think I need to see.  Sad - to people REALLY living in the 2026 world - but totally working compilation of what it takes to keep my train on the tracks.  

BUT nobody could get to me yesterday as I signed up to and will be "attending" this afternoon a talk by Dr. Thaddeus Pope.  Doesn't get much better than that.  

And more of the "so could be today" quotes from Roosevelt book. Of the monied classes: "These men were not weak men, but they permitted themselves to grow shortsighted and selfish." Back to yesterday - walk with former co-worker, 1 p.m. FEN workshop - repeat but always hear something new, 7 p.m. very interesting Rochester DC.  Today, walk with family friend, noon - SDHS with Dr. Pope.  Nothing on my paper calendar for Saturday.  Rest up for next week's company and cat tending.

May 2026 is going to go down as "a" month...

Temp solution on my laptop keyboard issue...but I will take it at this point.  May is putting me through my paces.  Referendum, handing in my name badge for poll worker work, heat wave, sister #1 and friend coming to town, planning for June son visit, "a" issue, cat sitting, input from DCs, Shoprite "seniors' desertion", no more Chicago shows until next season, going from "immersed in" to "head in sand" on town doings...Lots for someone where one ( me, myself and I) is SOOOO not the loneliest number kind of gal.  :)  And I read this line in my T Roosevelt book this a.m. about our country, but it fits for me too.  Americans learn only from catastrophes and not from experience. Theodore Roosevelt.  Enjoying the book.  To Rescue the American Spirit: Teddy Roosevelt and the Birth of a Superpower.

Very restless sleep last night.  So yesterday - cleaned apt, early walk alone - family friend was picking up a new queen bee for one of her hives, great EOLD, paced a lot, call from computer guy came a few minutes after 7 p.m. so I hustled up to his house to find out - wrong part for my laptop.  So now I have my laptop keyboard and an external keyboard for any dysfunctional letters...Not ideal but will work until part comes in.  Tossed and turned and now it is Thursday.  Brave and courteous...I tried.

Today - walk with former co worker from my first job "back home" in 2006, 1 p.m. FEN program, 7 p.m. Rochester DC.  

Forget about your cashflow problems and get out and about over the next few days. If you need money, the universe will channel it to you, but most likely you won’t as your friends will be happy to pay your way. They feel they owe you.

Problem with the keyboard...

Yesterday was a challenge.  I am losing the use of the letter pictured. :(  Trying to use it as little as possible.  :)  Computer guy ordered me a new one - keyboard not letter.  Will go to his house at some point today.

Tues - walk, CA DC, call from son, run dishes, resigned as poll worker for town.  Family friend can't walk today.  So walk and EOLD and wait for computer guy to call. Clean house.

BIG change day for me... :)

First shopping day of my Shoprite boycott/ALDI shopping life.  As I shared with those who follow my angst of shopping. "No cart, so no quarter issue.  Just filled my bags AND I used self check out!  Big day for me and week's "investment" - $18.25.  Didn't need much.  Good week to begin with.  Savings versus same items Shoprite.  $9.46.  ($7.64 of saving is 3.64 lbs of green grapes - on sale at ALDI, not Shoprite) :)  Will not do this every week but was curious today.  Looks like Monday post walk is my new grocery day/time.  Also stopped at Fast Lane and tires were AOK.  Good day all around.  :)"

Perfect image for my yesterday.  I also put BOS, BOF, BOE on my list of silent protests.  I will leave them to do what they do to right the budget ship.  Nothing that I have shared with any of the powers that be has stuck, so I will let it go.  Change = Chance for me to stay in my lane and not be distracted by shiny objects that are not within my reach.  

Had to smile when I saw this in my inbox this a.m. - Board of Finance Meeting UPDATE - The air conditioning is currently NOT functioning at the Community Center and the meeting room temperature is 82 degrees. We are requesting that you log in remotely online for this evening’s Board of Finance meeting if possible.

Forgot to report yesterday that I did my Sunday walk to Unionville and visited with swimming lady about my "assignment".  :)

So Monday - in a form of "first day of the rest of my life" - walk, ALDI, wash clothes, PA DC, read my W&T book.  I read it before, but I don't remember the ending and am curious why I recommended to the library lady...so I am giving it a second read.  

Today - Walk, run dishwasher, CA DC, library consortium speaker - "Reshape Your Beliefs and Unlock Your True Potential with Nir Eyal".  Nothing else on my paper calendar.

Overload day in my easily overloaded way :)

My sister #4's cat who died on Good Friday, but using this pic as I was just "assigned" to cat feeding while swimming lady is off to see her sister and BIL in Arizona next week...I am not an animal person but glad I had the experience of doing cat related tasks when I was at sister #4's.  :)  It is also the same time that sister #1 and friend from Paraguay are in town.  Maybe good that it is all in one week.  So one week of "connecting" then back to solitude until son is here in June.  Speaking of son - sad about Pistons.  Have to smile at the lack of national support - my TV station that was network to show the game - showed a college softball playoff game instead.  Why would anyone around here want to watch Pistons and Cavaliers?  Detroit SO does not get the respect it deserves.  Double whammy that Cleveland was their opponent.  :)

Getting to my machine at 5:54 a.m.  Restless night - next week AND trying to decide how to approach grocery shopping with Shoprite's abandonment of me and the senior discount.  I will hit ALDI today for grapes, bananas, and bread and then...next week with sister #1 here, but she stays at an airbnb so not disruptive to meal #1 but meal #2 will be a crap shot for Wed, Thurs, Fri.  I will be eating lots of regular people food in restaurants. 

Spoke to sister #6 and #1 on Sunday.  #6 is on double duty time - finishing up school year and working at "the tent".  Just noticed that Lyle Lovett is going to be there this season.  :)

This week - PA DC today, CA DC and library consortium talk on Tuesday, Wednesday EOLD with the 3rd of 3 series with VSED doula, Thursday walk with former co worker from first job I had when I came home in 2006, 1 p.m. FEN webinar, 7 p.m. Rochester DC.  As to "holiday weekend", I am hoping Albany CA DC is still on for Sunday, and I know ZEN DC is on for Monday, and CA DC for Tuesday then with company in town I will miss May 27 EOLD but will hope to be home for GA DC Wednesday p.m.  Company leaves and swimming lady comes home on Saturday so I will be back on my own on May 31!!!  

Do have to go online and make my summer "investment" in my Senior discount pool membership - $25 for the season.  June 18-August 23, 2026  $25.00.  $7 a visit if son decides to join me when he is here.  :)  He is renting a car so we will have more mobility than my MAZDA allows, so we might be doing some visiting.  Niece, sister #4.  We will see how long he has in the area.  

So today - wash clothes, walk, bananas/grapes/bread run to ALDI.  Beginning my head in the sand approach to town politics so not watching BOF meeting...I am over it all.  And do not have the patience to watch the "watch paint dry" pace of how local government works.  They have taken care of it before me for centuries, I think they will do fine without me now.

Calm day yesterday after some rumbling days.  I am in my head in the sand phase as to town politics.  I will keep eyes off and stay quiet and calm.  Did some recon yesterday as to ALDI and Shoprite.  Transition underway.  Will see how that goes.  Also have to transition to warm weather walking garb...I had given away a lot more than I thought when I did my 2024 de-cluttering.  :)

Didn't talk to anyone yesterday.  Walk.  L&O and Chicago shows watched.  SO glad I did not do the Neighbors helping Neighbors yesterday.  Yesterday was exactly as I needed it.  :)

Today - walk to Unionville, visit with swimming lady re her trip to Arizona and when she needs me to house/cat sit.

Tied up lots of mental loss ends yesterday.  Sent off my missive to chairs of BOS, BOE, BOF.  I will go back to my "head in the sand" stance.  As the BOS chair shared. Thank you for the very long day you and others continue to perform every election/referendum cycle.  Democracy would not flourish were it not for people like you.  It does not go unnoticed.  Lots to digest in your commentary (I’ll leave it at that). I wish things were easy but when government is involved, it never is.  

I do wish that people who complain about something would provide examples (like you did)so that we can focus on certain areas of concern and either correct or educate the premises behind the issue. See you soon at the next referendum,  get some rest!    :-)  He will discover that I will no longer work the elections.  I will let those who have the patience and long term commitment to the end result carry the load.  Will see who steps up.  I was interested to see that a town that usually goes down swinging on their budget deliberations - Yes: 876 No: 685 Total # Voted: 1,561 Percent Turnout: 12.0%  Pop: 19,324.  My town - YES = 796, NO = 1447.  23% turnout , Pop: 10,419.  So back to the drawing board and another referendum and I will vote absentee and not work the polls.  I can't support a broken system by my presence and active participation.  

So back to real life...yesterday:  walk with family friend.  Ran into town 1st Selectman and CAO on tail end of walk.  :)  They were hustling into town hall to start the "what's next" conversation.  Very funny episode with family friend and her trip to our local bank - can't make up small town stuff.  Heard from brother and sister #4 asking about their buddies I ran into at the polls.  Heard from son who has ended his vagabong-ing until he heads east in June for a NYC wedding and visit with me.  Have not seen him in person since Jan 1 2025.  Listened a bit to the psychedelic and aging webinar, but it was mostly the presenter reading from her book.  THEN my massage!!!  Then watched L&O.  Then to former school #2 for Spring Musical - The Addams Family.  The girls were great.  Enjoyed seeing people from my time there.  

Today - did not get up until 6:16 a.m.!!!  Long couple of day and the massage hangover.  SOOOO glad I cancelled myself on the Neighbors Helping Neighbors today.  I finished my Gauguin book this a.m.  Will go for a LONG walk maybe to include an orientation walk through of ALDI.  :)  So watch All-In, L&O SVU, walk, watch Chicago shows.  Tomorrow 1 p.m. to swimming lady friend's to get my orientation for watching her cat and house while she goes off to Arizona to see sister and BIL who is not well.

3:42 a.m.

Not sure how this image hit me this a.m. but it feels a bit like how to keep moving forward - what/who is the hub and what are the spokes and...how do we get it rolling.  Budget failed epically yesterday.  I walked up and arrived at Community Center at 5:15 a.m. and got home around 9 p.m.  Glad I walked - especially needed the fresh air and open space on the walk home. BUT I did not turn "my machine" on so did not see emails from yesterday until 3:12 a.m. this morning.  It has taken me a bit to get through them all AND the biggest gaffe yesterday...I FORGOT TO ENTER THE HGTV HOUSE CONTEST OR BACKYARD REDO CONTEST YESTERDAY...Sick about that almost mas than the referendum failing.  I will try to recover.  Entered for today already.  

I was the ballot clerk so except for one break to eat half a sandwich and go the bathroom I was at "my station."  Roiled at the some of the chattiness of the checkers BUT the good news I was ALONE at my station.  Will shoot something off to the chairs of BOS, BOE, and BOF this a.m.  I had most of it written but that was for the referendum passing...

In my inbox from yesterday.  Son was on a bus from Chicago to Detroit.  Guess he flew from CDMX at some point this week and is now heading home.  Swimming lady needs me to cat/house sit May 21-28.  Which I will do.  FEN O&E meeting is being rescheduled from May 18 to June 18 or 19.  CH friends are off to SC HS reunion for the wife and the mountains after that.  They do have a good handle on making life the most it can be.  

Today for me - rescheduled walk from Wednesday this a.m. with family friend, webinar at noon -Psychedelics and the Reimagining of Aging with Abbie Rosner , MASSAGE at 1:30 p.m.!!!, and if I get the gumption - Spring Musical at former school #2 tonight.  I will make that call post walk.  Massage lady came into vote yesterday and I told her to make sure she got a good night's rest last night because I was going to be a mess for today's appt.  :)  Can't wait for Saturday and Sunday to relax into myself.

So much for the alarm I set.  Up at 2 a.m.  Will go through my routine.  Get to the referendum polls by 5:15 a.m.  Still wondering about driving or walking.  Will see how the morning goes.  15 minute walk to the Community Center/Polls.  Wish me luck making it until 8:30 p.m.  Hope the $200+ is worth it.  :)  Not sure what I wish for as to the outcome.  I have words for either outcome for the BOF meeting on Monday.

Yesterday filled in - walked along, with umbrella for most of the walk, family friend rescheduled for Friday a.m., great EOLD, good FEN volunteer meeting, very moving Lansing DC.  Watched FBI from Monday.  Today - Referendum.  Will watch my Chicago shows over the weekend if I don't get them in on Friday.  Friday - walk, Massage Friday!!!, former school #2 play is the plan.  Now that I cancelled on Neighbors helping Neighbors - nothing on my paper calendar Saturday or Sunday.  

Told Lansing group last night that today will be like a life review - seeing people who have known me all my life and then others who just know me at the crazy old lady who wanders around town...

So yesterday - $22.20/$8.25 7:10 a.m. check out time Shoprite day sans senior discount. Ran dishwasher. Walk.  Picked up W&T book.  CA DC.  SD DC.  Trying to finish Gauguin book.  Today walk with family friend, clean apt, noon EOLD, 2 p.m. annual FEN volunteer meeting, 7 p.m. Lansing.  BOS meeting that I will watch on computer tomorrow.  FBI episode from Monday I have not watched yet.  Got reminder from ROV about tomorrow. "Try and arrive by 5:15 a.m."...  Will have to get my coffee and breakfast in before I leave the apt.  4:57 a.m. as we speak, so I am thinking I better set an alarm for tomorrow a.m.  Wanted to walk up and back, but rain and time might dictate that decision tomorrow.  :)

Working on my words to share at the BOF meeting on May 18 about adapting to change due to financial constraints...and wham-o...checking my receipt at Shoprite and no Senior Discount.  So I go back to checker and discover no mas discount.  5% a week of not a big number but a number nonetheless.  So now I will give ALDI a try for 4 weeks and see if I can come in at the same or better numbers of Shoprite and begin a new tradition.  New day for shopping?  New time of day for shopping (ALDI does not open until 9 a.m.)  Just tried the ALDI web site...they are not wasting money on IT.  :/  Will have to work on my "relationship" with a new vendor.  Exactly what I am suggesting to town leaders as to really looking at what they are spending on and if they are locked into practices that need to be replaced.  Never fun but maybe the town needs a reason to "go ALDI" on some things.

Interesting start to the week

Mettle and ZEN were the focus of yesterday.  Good walk.  Lots of thoughts and talk.  Town budget and I was the only one to show up for the Mettle "de-brief" from Friday's discussion, so I got an hour of time with the facilitator.  Sent off "memo" to Park & Rec about Senior Center application process.  Made it clear that I was not a joiner so I would go quiet going forward - they have enough thoughts from me and it is pool time as of June 18.  Looking to Thursday and glad it looks like it will be a rainy day so I won't mind being inside all day working the polls for budget.  Did work on what I plan to share at the May 18 BOF meeting - in person.  Comments might change based on how the budget referendum goes.  Lunch, snacks, dinner provided.  Need to work on the timing of getting up and getting my coffee/breakfast done and get myself to the polls by 5:30 a.m.  Now that it looks like I will driving up rather than walking due to rain.  Hope the money is worth it.  I have so few "have to be somewheres" these days and this week I have a few... Voting, massage, spring musical, Saturday work day...

Holidays

Yesterday was an interesting day of thoughts.  Happy Mother's Day to me - new asphalt on my walk south on rails to trails, text from student from former school #1, son, PD buddy, son's friend from Tarpon Springs, NC friends who recently moved to the next level of their CCRC life and times, young boy with him father on rails to trails who stopped to share with me that it was his first time riding his bicycle 3 miles.  Got the text from former student at 1:11 p.m.  Picture from his graduation day in 2019.  My biggest thought for the day is not to overthink or overplan the next days or months...go into a react/respond mode.  Answers will come.

This week Mettle this afternoon, ZEN DC tonight, tomorrow CA DC, Wednesday - EOLD, FEN volunteer meeting, Lansing DC and a BOS meeting that I will watch on Friday, Thursday is referendum - 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday noon psychedelic presentation, MASSAGE, Spring Musical at former school #2 if all stays on plan, Saturday - Neighbors helping Neighbors if I stick with that.  Looks like rain on Thursday which will be fine with me as I will be inside all day.  :)

Food day :)

Day started way early even for me yesterday but it all evened out.  Early walk and I ran into a high school classmate and her husband who I rarely see.  Nice treat.  Got through my full loop and a bit more with no rain.  Nice.  Had a text from family friend to see if I wanted to go to dinner with her and her husband.  Nice.  Cookies on my stoop from landlady when I got back from walk. Nice.  Text from PD buddy that rails to trails to Unionville is done and open for my Sunday walk.  Nice. Family friend shared a pic from my son's instagram that he was DJ'ing in CDMX last night.  Glad to see something developed after the cancellation of their big show due to outdoor venue and bad weather forecast.  No William Basinski in CDMX anoche.   

Read some more of my book about Gauguin.  Dinner topped off with a complimentary piece of cake for all the mothers.  I loved that!  Cleaned my plate at the restaurant and ate the cake when I got home at 8 p.m..  Amazed that I slept through the night.  

Today - 4:47 a.m. as we speak so more reasonable hour to be writing and starting the day.  Walk to Unionville.  Painfully paid COMCAST bill.  Will see what else the day brings.

Did not feel kindness when I looked out my window onto Main and saw the superintendent of schools car parked front and center.  Oh well.  Will let that go.  If he feels the need to do that in spite of retail needs for his own convenience, so be it.

Yesterday - watched Thursday shows, walked, Mettle Health webinar, talked to sister #6.  She called to say that at 11 a.m.-ish the power went out at her school and they had to dismiss for the day.  She was a happy person.  :)  She does have to go in today to do placement testing for students coming in for 2026-27 school year.  Her Key Club is making pancakes so the kids have breakfast before their testing.  She and sister #4 are/were incredible teachers - and people.  

Today - Boston Blue, All-In, walk.  Nothing on my paper calendar today or tomorrow.  Awaiting electric and cable bills.  Notice from electric that it might be lower based on some legislative action, notice from cable that it might be higher due to whatever they do to justify it going up and up.  Will see what I see in my inbox over the next few days.  

Reminding myself about Wickham Garden in the area. Trying to decide what is around for when son comes in June.  Also looked into TURO in the area.  Have that be my key to mobility with my decrepit car...will ask son about that when he is here.  There are people in my town who participate.  Rent a car for a day or two every once in a while is cheaper than buying a new car...just a thought for some summer visits.  Son will be renting a car for when he is here.
