What a Friday! It felt longer already - the day after the winter solstice and I made the most of it, even going into "tomorrow" before I called it a day. We had a skeleton crew at work where everyone but the Devil Loves Prada boss and me as her pariah assistant went out for a Christmas lunch. I have to put some thought into re-positioning within my work setting for new year. But as I was leaving work at 5 (the rest of the school offices left at noon...), my holiday spirit was waning AND THEN - I am walking to my car and the school chapel bells started playing "I wish you a Merry Christmas", "Silent Night", and I can't remember the third one. All I know is that I was smiling as I walked to my car and wondered "who saw me and started that music?". The chapel was dark, no a soul was stirring on that side of campus - it was totally and completely just for me! It was a gift! So now I was re inspired and headed home totally rejoiced. (I don't know if that is a verb...)
So I headed home, took a long walk (in a drizzling rain), re-heated some of the dinner I brought home from Thursday night's dinner - I received a plate of tortellini that could have fed a family of 4 at that restaurant, then finished wrapping gifts (which for me is putting that curling ribbon and taking scissors to it for each package. I don't do wrapping paper), THEN... I decided to file and clean and sort and arrange. Lucky I only have 900 sq ft and not much "business" so it did not take long, but I feel great and ready for the new year.
I finally sat down in time to watch Letterman and Conan. I don't think I had ever watched Letterman for his Christmas show, but it was great. I regular - I forget his name - had a return trip to tell his story about The Lone Ranger (Clayton Moore?) and to knock a meatball off the top of the Late Show Christmas tree with a football. He has been doing it for years but this year Letterman hit it off before the guest did. Very funny guy! Then I guess another repeat Christmas guest - a singer who sang Christmas songs and by that time I was crying. What a great way to end the day. Kate Blanchette was sandwiched in. Great Show! Letterman is a genius. Then I started watching Conan and he had a great bit on HIS ideas for holiday postage stamps - "Asphyxiate Me Elmo" was a hit. Then I had to turn it off when Carson Daly (I think that is his name) came on. His new bike riding physique is looks very unsettling to me. He is someone that healthy does not look good on. But I love Conan. I could not have orchestrated my night any better. But 1:13 a.m. to bed. NOT my style!
But now, call from parents this morning to wake me up at 9 a.m., then my cousin, then sister #4 (sister #5 did call last night), so I better get moving. I am on cleaning the parents' house assignment, checking out what the house needs for tomorrow and the crowd arrives. Sister #5 got news yesterday that a student's parents are gifting her with a catered birthday lunch for 15! These are the same parents who made a gift in my sister's name to the school she works at. How nice of them after the year my sister has had AND that her birthday is the day after Christmas so it is hard for people to shift gears from Christmas to her birthday and her now ex-husband used to lavish her with gifts and festivities for both days. So it was a perfect gift from these parents!
My UPS package was homemade cookies from a good friend in NC and a card signed by "the boys" at the warehouse who I worked with there. Cookies are incredibly good and I love all the names on the card. Can't wait for my Feb trip.
Sports are great - bowl games starting up, AI in a loss but in Denver, NFL all day everyday it seems over the holiday weekend. CCSU/VT game next Thursday. But I was hearing that that the liquor stores are not happy in CT because the "EVES" this year fall on Sunday and no sales on Sunday!
If I don't get back on before Christmas. Merry Christmas!
